The IIRS-ISRO Outreach Programme at Government College Sangrah is a significant initiative that aims to introduce students and faculty to the advanced applications of Geospatial Technologies such as Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). This programme is a collaboration between the college’s Department of Geography and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, Dehradun.

Started under the academic leadership of Dr. Jagdish Chand, the programme was established with the objective of enhancing the technical capacity of students and staff through specialized training in space-based technologies and their applications in various sectors like environment, agriculture, disaster management, and urban planning.

The purpose of the programme is to provide quality exposure and hands-on learning experiences to undergraduate students, helping them align with national scientific missions and career opportunities in geospatial sciences. It also aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications.

So far, the college has successfully conducted more than 20 training sessions, workshops, and certificate courses under the IIRS-ISRO Outreach Programme. Students from the BA 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of Geography benefit immensely from direct interaction with ISRO scientists, gaining insights into current technologies and research practices.

Highlights of the Programme:

  • Target Audience: The program is open to both students and faculty members, offering a unique opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in space-based technology and applications.
  • Mode of Learning: Courses are conducted online via the IIRS Learning Management System, enabling participants to attend from the college’s smart classrooms or remotely.
  • Course Offerings: The programme offers short-term and diploma-level courses on various topics such as:
    • Remote Sensing and GIS Applications
    • Satellite Meteorology
    • Geospatial Technologies for Urban Planning
    • Disaster Management using Space Technology
    • Climate Change and Environmental Monitoring
  • Certification: Participants receive certificates from IIRS–ISRO upon successful completion, which adds value to their academic and professional profiles.
